Paulo Freire worked in public education as a teacher and manager of an education department. After several life experiences, in 1996 he published his latest work “Pedagogy of Autonomy: knowledge necessary for educational practice”. Among the diverse knowledges, the work presents a perspective of critical evaluation of both practice (teaching) and learning (student), which stimulates the autonomy of educators and students as transforming subjects of reality. In this sense, we aim to reflect on the evaluation based on the work “Pedagogia da Autonomia” by Paulo Freire, considering the concept addressed by the author. As a result, we point out that the coexistence of teachers and students requires an assessment for decision making constructed by both. In addition, it is necessary to critically position ourselves against regulatory assessment models of educational work, since assuming a progressive critical stance, we must combine discourse with our practice. Furthermore, there is a constant need, as teachers, for permanent training in for action-reflection-action.
