Affection, teaching, and sports: a theoretical essay

Abstract

Affection can be evidenced in various situations within sports practice, including those related to teaching. Based on this premise, we can say that, mediated by affection, the teaching-learning process in sports revolves around the relationships that exist between the subjects: the teacher/coach, the student/athlete, and the object: the sport. The quality of these relationships can determine whether the teaching, training, and learning processes in sports are on the right path and in the correct direction for the holistic development of the human being. This essay aimed to discuss the role of affection in teaching practice and sports learning. A discussion on affection and its influence on the teaching-learning process in the sports domain was conducted. Finally, this essay highlights the implications and consequences concerning the relationship between the affection factor and the quality of pedagogical mediation in either bringing the student/athlete closer to or distancing them from the sport.

Author Biographies

Arthur William Santos Pinheiro, Universidade Estadual de Campinas

Professor de Educação Física, licenciado e bacharel, mestre em Educação Física pela Faculdade de Educação Física da Unicamp na área de concentração Educação Física e Sociedade. Doutorando em Educação Física na área de Biodinâmica e Esporte pela mesma Universidade.

Faculty member of the Faculty of Physical Education and Physiotherapy (FEFF) at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM). Holds a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from the State University of Campinas (2005) and is also licensed in Physical Education from the State University of Campinas (2007). They have a Master's degree in Physical Education and Society from the State University of Campinas (2018) and a Ph.D. in Physical Education and Society from the State University of Campinas (2022). They have experience in the field of Physical Education, with a focus on Sports Pedagogy, primarily working on the following topics: sports pedagogy, youth sports, youth competitions, team sports, handball, game pedagogy, and the coach's moral and ethical aspects.

Alcides José Scaglia, Universidade Estadual de Campinas

Associate Professor in Sports Pedagogy and Game Pedagogy from the State University of Campinas (2019), Ph.D. in Movement Pedagogy from the State University of Campinas (2003), Master's degree in Sports Pedagogy from the State University of Campinas (1999), Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from the State University of Campinas (1995), and Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from the State University of Campinas (1995).

They have experience in the field of Physical Education and Sports, conducting studies, projects, and research in the areas of: school Physical Education, Game and Sports Pedagogy, with an emphasis on the teaching-learning-training methodology of invasion team games, soccer from initiation to training, and game pedagogy.

Currently, they are an Associate Professor (M.S.5.1) at the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FCA-UNICAMP) in the Sports Science program at UNICAMP, co-responsible for research at LEPE (Laboratory of Studies in Sports Pedagogy), and leader of the research group LEPE-FUT. They are also a Full Professor in the graduate program, offering master's and doctoral degrees at the Faculty of Physical Education (FEF) of UNICAMP.
