This article proposes to analyze the work “The Importance of the act of reading: in three articles that are completed” by Paulo Freire (2011) to identify the theoretical constructs of the author and his main contributions to teacher education, highlighting the knowledge necessary for teaching, together with the entanglement of teaching work, complexities and challenges that educators face in their daily practice. In this way, it is understood that the educator needs, in a constant line, to design and develop activities that intersect the three pillars of training that are teaching, research and extension and to evaluate, intervene and be based on the epistemological knowledge of teaching. The teaching practice is configured in its complexity, very distant from the premise of teaching, as a "gift" or based on the contemporary assertion of the "notorious teaching knowledge". Freire (2011) contributes substantially to the understanding of teaching knowledge, as he sees the importance of critical reading as an instrument of human and professional emancipation.
