Abstract

The aim of the study is to review and describe the main available evidence related to the diagnostic approach to facial pain, especially in the primary care setting, and to provide a tool that synthesizes the findings. This article is a literature review. A search was carried out in databases such as PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, Google Academic, and Scopus. Keywords "facial pain", "facial neuralgia", "trigeminal nerve disease", and "diagnosis" were used. It was found that facial pain should be approached syndromatically and etiologically, identifying aspects of pain suggestive of central or peripheral neurological alteration, and conducting a complete clinical and paraclinical study to identify the etiology. We conclude that facial pain requires a comprehensive approach and should be a central topic in teaching programs in medicine and dentistry.
