New High School

The New High School (NEM), established in Brazil in 2022, is seen by researchers, teachers and students as a setback in education, given the possibility of increasing social inequalities, especially with regard to public education. In view of this problem, this article seeks to discuss the knowledge and literacy practices of teachers in the area of languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish, Art and Physical Education) who work in NEM. Methodologically, it falls within the scope of Applied Linguistics (Moita Lopes, 1996; 2006) and is a qualitative research (Bogdan; Biklen, 1994), whose data were generated from questionnaires applied to teachers collaborating in the research. Based on literacy studies (Kleiman, 1995, 2010; Hamilton, 2000; Oliveira, 2008; Paz, 2008; Street, 1984; 1995), the results reveal that teachers' knowledge about NEM is still incipient and literacy practices have received little reinterpretation in the "new" paradigm presented due to gaps in continuing education and the inadequate structure of schools. Therefore, it is necessary to expand the dialogue and reflection on educational reforms, especially NEM, highlighting the speeches and experiences of teachers and students.
