Abstract

The context of the new coronavirus pandemic highlighted the negative impacts on the demand for mental health care for children and adolescents, as well as the need for a careful look at the family and caregivers. The objective of the article is to present the experience of implementing a family outpatient clinic in a tertiary service specializing in Psychiatry for children and adolescents, highlighting the coping strategies for the challenges related to the maintenance of care in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. An experience report of health workers was carried out –a psychiatrist, two psychologists and a social worker –from the Child and Adolescent Care Center, from March to December 2020. The results and discussion are presented: origin and organization of the Child and Adolescent Care Center; and, the challenges related to the assistance in theCovid-19 pandemic and coping strategies. It is considered of paramount importance to maintain the functioning of services aimed atcaring for the mental health of caregivers of children undergoing psychiatric care. Thus, maintaining the multidisciplinary approach aimed at caregivers has proven to be valuable for the follow-up and better understanding of the mental health problems of children and adolescents being followed, especially in view of the challenging context imposed by Covid-19.
