Introduction: Among Eating Disorders (ED), Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) share clinical and historicalcharacteristics, with their first medical descriptions and diagnostic categorizations occurring in the last century. Objectives: This article aims to briefly review the historical aspects of BN and BED, as well as review their categorizations throughout the editions of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Methodology: All editions of the ICD and DSM classifications were reviewed, as well as clinical psychiatry reference textbooks and publications on the history and evolution of these diagnoses. In addition, a brief update was made on the treatment of these disorders. Results: The diagnostic criteria of BN and BED were presented in each edition of the ICD and DSM since the first time they were categorized, and the successive changes were commented on. Finally, a brief update on treatments for both disorders was presented. Conclusion: It is essential, but not sufficient, for the clinician to know the most current diagnostic criteria for pathologies. It is also important to understand the evolution of the concept and thus have a more comprehensive and even critical view of the criteria, based on the awareness of its provisional nature.
