Abstract

The article discusses the role played by the Baron of Rio Branco in the development and consolidation of nationalism in Brazil. The analysis focuses in three characteristics of Brazilian nationalism: its late development, the use of the territory as a myth of origin, and the attempt made to equate dynasty and
nation.
