Abstract

This essay presents a reflection on the concept of the world of work, presented in the Pedagogy of Multiliteracies: designing social futures (NLG, 1996), highlighting the relationship between school education and the world of work in a country like Brazil, and the possibilities of taking the concept of the world of work as an important theoretical-practical device for the design of in-service teacher training, in view of the need to deepen, at school, discussions about the role of school education in the insertion of students in the world of work. I argue that it is necessary to bring the relations between school and the world of work to progressive debates, in order to advance in the critical formation of the working class. I rely, to a certain extent, on authors of the “giro decolonial”, such as Mignolo (2003); Quijano (2010), Walsh (2013), Grosfoguel (2019) and Souza Santos (2010), in order to propose a “southern” reading of the relations between school and the world of work.
