Keywords:

In the Dominican Republic, Haitian immigrants and Haitian- Dominicans are marked by
an “Otherness” that deprives them
of cultural and legal Dominican
identity, or dominicanidad. This
paper explores the link between
language and power in the
Dominican Republic, demonstrating how language has been weaponized against Haitian migrants and their descendants in an attempt to keep power in the hands of those who are deemed to be “true Dominicans.”
