  • World Tensions - Extraordinary Edition: Genocide of the Palestinian People
    Vol. 20 No. 42 (2024)

    In this special edition of the World Tensions publication, titled Genocide of the Palestinian People, we focus on a grave historical moment; one which requires immediate global attention. We live in times in which the Palestinian resistance transcends the borders of its territory, becoming an appeal to the defence of life, of self-determination, and the survival of its people. This edition not only answers to this appeal, but also ponders the fundamental role of academia and scientific critical thinking in the articulation of the world’s public opinion and in the conflict of ideas.

     

    Artist of this Edition: HEBA ZAGOUT

    Heba Zagout was born in 1984, in the Al Burejj refugee camp, in the Gaza Strip. She descended from a Nakba refugee family. From a very early age, she found in art a way to express her feelings and dreams of freedom. She studied design at the Gaza Learning Center and studied fine arts at Al-Aqsa University. She was an arts education teacher at a Gaza primary school and served as an educator at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees. The vibrantly colored paintings, rich in details and endowed with poignant symbolism, portrayed the landscapes, customs, everyday scenes, traditions and cultural symbols of their people. Her works are a visual and documentary record of the history of Palestinian resistance as a way of confronting the cultural erasure imposed by the Israeli occupation, in addition to keeping memory alive through art. Heba Zagout and two of her four children were murdered on October 13, 2023 in an Israeli Armed Forces aerial bombardment that destroyed their home in Gaza.

    CARLOS DIEGO CAVALCANTE

    Carlos Diego Cavalcante (Vazio) é natural do Iguatu-Ceará, grafiteiro, ilustrador, produtor e músico. Entre as suas recentes atividades, podemos citar: membro fundador do “Coletivo cerebral” (Iguatu - 2016 a 2018); participação como artista convidado no Festival Internacional de Graffiti Concreto (Fortaleza  - 2012 e 2020); idealizador da exposição Soda Plástica Vazio Atropical  (Crato, Orós e Iguatu,  2016 a 2018); palestra e oficina sobre o tema Graffiti x Pichação como artista convidado na Escola de Artes  (Orós - 2019); participação como artista convidado no  Oxe Festival Nacional de Arte Urbana ( Barbalha - 2022); membro fundador do projeto Água Suja - Projeto de música eletrônica experimental  em 2019 (ainda em atividade).

    We dedicate this issue of World Tensions to the interdisciplinary academic debate on different forms of direct and structural violence. Our aim is to contribute to reflections on the current context of conflicts and oppressions within local, regional, and global scopes, with a focus on an agenda of international relations guided by notions of human collectives' right to life. The participants of this thematic edition have accepted the challenge of thinking critically in this period of growing uncertainty and catastrophe, that threaten to destroy life forms on the planet.

    MATHEUS MARTINS LEKAS EVANGELISTA

    Energetic and exuberant, the expressions of Matheus Evangelista are as global as the stamps in his passport. A citizen of three countries, his work combines both his multi-cultural heritage and fascination with nature, aviation, and science. Always eager to discover new forms of creativity, and explore new horizons, Evangelista's work is as playful and bright as it is thoughtful and sincere.

    Raimundo Santos Bida is a plastic artist born in Nazaré das Farinhas, a city located in the recôncavo of Bahia. He begins to draw and falls in love as a child with paintings at the age of three. His first work on canvas was conducted at the age of 11, when he got to know Pelourinho, in the historic center of Salvador. During this period, he became involved with the artistic movement and participated in numerous exhibitions, biennials, and other events in the art world. At the age of 18, he exhibited for the first time outside Brazil in the United States. Today, he holds almost 80 international exhibitions in several countries. His work is a portrait of the Northeastern people, and the basis of the work is naïve art, but it is greatly influenced by various movements such as modernism, cubism, and contemporary art.

    Artist of this edition

    Jacinta Cavalcante is a native of Pedra Branca, in the backlands of Ceará, and currently resides in Fortaleza. Graduated in Dentistry from the Federal University of Ceará, she is a visual artist/sculptor with courses in several areas, such as: watercolor; Engravings; sculpture; ceramics; ceramics; oil painting. As a child, she learned acrylic painting in her hometown, and participated in several exhibitions in Ceará, assigning her works in collections of art collectors. Jacinta is an attentive, curious, innovative artist, always in search of new looks and knowledges, new techniques, whether shaping or merging. The formatting of his works relates to a commitment to the world in which he lives, and to everything that composes it.

    Artist of this edition

    Sandra Montenegro, born in Fortaleza, graduated in Psychology at the Federal University of Ceará, MBA postgraduate – Human Resource Management at the Estácio University of Ceará, and with a specialisation in Work and Organisational Psychology from the Regional Council of Psychology. At 13 years-old, she won the 1st Salão dos Novos award from the Fortaleza municipality, an occasion which consequently marks 2022 as Sandra’s 50th anniversary in her field. She is part of the “In-Grafika Collective” since 2016, with five other artists from Ceará that have in common: production, discussion, and the discovery of new outlooks on engraving (wood engraving, linocut, chalcography, and lithography). Her themes focus nature and the human figure. During her artistic education, she worked with several mentors and artists from the Ceará artistic landscape: João Maria Siqueira, Mariza Viana, Descarte Gadelha, Válber Benevides, Eduardo Eloy, Sebastião de Paula, among others. She has been participating in several individual and collective expositions, as well as national and international galleries (Uguguay, Portugal, Poland, Mexico, Romenia, Switzerland, Republic of Macedonia, etc.)

    Artist of this edition

    Nathalie Nicolas, French artist and curator, lives in Berlin and Canoa Quebrada, Ceará, having studied at the Escola de Belas Artes and the Academie Charpentier, both in Paris, and at the Akademie für Malerei, in Berlin. He has held exhibitions in France, Germany and, recently, in Brazil, trying to attract audiences that are not used to visiting museums with his works of art. His interest is to produce meetings and collaborations between cultural and social groups. In Aracati, he invited groups of artists from the region and abroad to meet and exhibit at the Francisca Clotilde Theater Gallery, at the Jaguaribano Historical Museum, at the Faculdade do Vale do Jaguaribe, at the Unijaguaribe University. He accepted the invitation of the Secretary of Culture of Aracati to organize the inaugural show of the new “Espaço das Artes CE” with the KRAFT collective from Fortaleza. Since 2021, he has been curator of Artistic Projects for Instituto Vale Jaguaribe and has participated in group exhibitions at the UFC Museum of Art.

    Gerson Ipirajá is a native of Fortaleza and began activities in visual arts from 1994 by encouraging and guiding of Zé Tarcísio from Aracatí /CE. In 2000, he began attendig courses and engraving workshops in various techniques with renowned engravers such as: Eduardo Eloy, Ana Letícia Quadros, Evandro Carlos Jardim, Ruben Grillo, Gabriel Arcanjo, Mestre Hélio Soares and Miriam Tolpollar. Since then, he actively participates in Exhibitions in Brazil and abroad with emphasis on : Triennale Mondial d'estampes de Chamarlieres - France ( 2021 ), Triennale Xilon Greechen - Switzerland ( 2021 ), United Nations - 7 5 Years of ONU - United States of America and Switzerland ( 2021 ), International Print Biennial Varna - Bulgaria ( 2019 and 2011 ), National Engraving Exhibition -House of Woodcut Museum - Ribeirão Preto/SP ( 2018 ) ,  Salão de Abril - Fortaleza/CE ( 2018- Design Award , 2017, 2006, 2005 and 2004 ). The artist is part of the Collective In-Grafika, and is professor of Woodcut and Lithography at the Thomaz Pompeu Sobrinho School of Arts and Crafts (Fortaleza/CE).

    André Dias Araújo is an illustrator, comic artist and director of animated film. He has been developing artistic works since 1995, seeking to highlight nuances that often go unnoticed. He was a student and coordinator of the Animation Center of Casa Amarela Eusélio Oliveira, at Federal University of Ceará, until 2004. He has produced numerous films and videos of authors and institutions. Editor and collaborator of Pindaíba magazine. His urban sketches record a variety of scenes, situations and characters from the urban daily life of Redenção and Acarape, as the result of a partnership with the University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusophony (UNILAB).

    Artis of this edition

    ANDRÉA DALL ’OLIO HILUY is a native of Fortaleza (CE), graduated in Architecture and Urbanism (UFC, 2001), with a master’s degree in City Sciences (UNIFOR, 2019) and a postgraduate degree in Lighting and Interior Design (INBEC, 2007). An artist with several exhibitions and curatorships, several of her works have been exhibited in public collections of the capital and metropolitan region. Andrea seeks layers and textures, especially of textile origin, experimenting with new materials. This path led to the deepening of this artistic lineage, replacing the inks with the lines in a free embroidery and then composing her own support, through the tapestry. Between forms, volumes, and deconstructions, she seeks a silent message through abstractionism, which unveils an insinuating and refined language about interpersonal relations with nature, objects, and art itself.

Apresentamos uma entrevista concedida ao programa de debates da Rádio Universitária FM sobre a crise diplomática brasileira e argumentamos que a reconfiguração do sistema mundial é uma exigência crescente.

    João Paulo José da Silva nasceu em Fortaleza, capital do Ceará. É graduado em história pela Universidade vale do Acaraú e artista visual autodidata. Seu trabalho consiste em técnicas de xilogravura, monotipia, entalho e pintura em madeira. Suas composições remetem aos universos ameríndio e cabloco. Com representação abstrata e minimalista faz analogias  às grafias e pinturas corporais dos índios. Atualmente, seu trabalho se encontra nos acervos do Museu Casa da Xilogravura, em São Paulo, e do Museu do Caju em Caucaia-CE, além de firmar parceria com a Galeria de Arte Umburana, no Rio de Janeiro.

    João Paulo José da Silva, born in Fortaleza, the capital of Ceara State, holds a degree in History from Vale do Acaraú University, and is a self-taught visual artist. His work consists of techniques of woodcut, monotype, slot, and wood painting. His compositions refer to the Amerindian and Cabobclo  universe. With abstract and minimalist representation, he makes analogies to the spellings and body  paintings of te Indians. Currently, his work is found in the collections of the Museu Casa da Xilogravura, in São Paulo, and of the Museu do Caju, in Caucaia-CE, in addition to partnering with the Umburana Art Gallery, in Rio de Janeiro.

    Luciana Benetti Marques Valio is a postdoctoral fellow in Visual Arts. His artistic work consists of the human / nature relationship. The natural environment of daily trips is its raw material. "Not everything that glitters is gold" is an urban intervention that appropriates natural elements found in everyday life. Seeds, fruits and shells are collected as part of the activity of observing the surroundings. Such elements go through the gold leafing process and are returned to the place of origin. The act of leafing through them refers to the meaning of gold as protection and purity. In addition, gold symbolizes a new skin for the Earth. Thus, the artist seeks another way of considering the elements of nature, emphasizing their transforming potential. In this photo essay, the individuality of each natural element that has been reframed is valued.

    Artist of this edition

    Gardevânia Farias, photographer and graduated in history, since 1992, has directed her work towards the historicity of Iguatu, city where she was born. Author of the book: “The Concise Inventory of the Architectural and Historical Patrimony of Iguatu” (2011) she, has several researches and several photographic exhibitions of evidence on the patrimonial, historical and architectural potential of Iguatu. In 2011, he received an invitation from the Italian consultant, in Fortaleza, to photograph architecture and urbanism in the cities of northern Italy, which would open an exhibition with the objective of showing a Brazilian and feminine look on the daily life of Lombardy, to be exposed in Italian language schools in Ceará. The photos shown here are part of this work, which seeks or enhances black and white with small colored details as escape points to attention. She is currently director of the Historical and Cultural Museum of Iguatu.

    Artista da Edição: João Felipe de Sousa nasceu no distrito de Quixeré (CE), lugar conhecido como Baixa do Felix. Trabalhador e autodidata, começou a traçar precocemente seus rascunhos artísticos inspirados em heróis de quadrinhos, mas foi só na fase adulta que despertou aos desenhos bicolores. Vindo de família de artistas (cantores, músicos, poetas e repentistas), desde cedo, atuou no teatro de sua cidade, onde escreveu poesias e letras de músicas. Seus desenhos são feitos em papel A4 com uma simples caneta esferográfica, mas com traços precisos e marcantes, inspirados pelo surrealismo.

    Artist of this issue

    Carlos Décimo de Souza was born in 1961 in Camocim, Ceará. He has a degree in Fishery Engineering from the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) and since 1995 lives in Brasilia. A self-taught artist, he follows a creative path marked by a passion for vibrant colors, elaborated into effects that resemble a hyper-expanded vision of digital pixels. The result is a work of visual impact that arouses dreamlike and sometimes psychedelic sensations. Visual lightness can appear absolutely or interspersed with massive blocks of color in quasi-sculptural compositions, obtained by both the overlaying of acrylic paint layers, giving it an opulent texture, as well as the perspective that creates volume and depth effects. Undeterred by trends, it is open to the influences of various arts schools from which it draws inspiration to translate them into their chromatic universe, where color and light complement each other in a disquieting and unexpected way.

    Rafael Limaverde, nascido em Belém, formou-se em artes visuais pelo Instituto Federal do Ceará. Xilogravurista, designer e ilustrador, expôs em Fortaleza, Crato, São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro. Ex-integrante do grupo Acidum, foi curador da “Eco Barroco” no Centro Cultural Banco do Nordeste (2011) e do “Bestiário Nordestino” no Centro de Arte e Cultura Dragão do Mar (2016). Como grafiteiro participou nas quatro edições do Festival Concreto e no Festival “Bahia de Todas as Cores” (2017). Seu trabalho se baseia na simbologia, no imaginário, na história, nos templos e rituais que compõem a experiência transcendental humana. Atualmente, pesquisa a cosmovisão religiosa sacralizada tanto pela igreja quanto pela religiosidade popular.

    Rafael Limaverde, born in Belem, graduated in Visual Arts at the Federal Institute of Ceará. Engraver, designer and illustrator, he has exhibited his works in Fortaleza, Crato, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Former member of the Acidum group, Rafael has curated the exhibitions, “Baroque echos” at the Centro Cultural Banco do Nordeste (2011) and “Northeastern Bestiary” at the Centro de Arte e Cultura Dragão do Mar (2016). As a graffiti artist Rafael has participated at four editions of the Festival Concreto and the Festival “Bahia de Todas as Cores” (2017). His works are based on symbolism, the imaginary, history, temples and rituals that compose transcendental human experience. Currently, he researches the religious worldview made sacred both by the Church and by popular religiosity.

    Andrei Loginov, bielorrusso em atividade em Berlim, formou-se em pintura em Minsk, e é mestre pela Academia de Artes de Dusseldorf.  Entre fotografias, fotomontagens, videoarte e instalações, sua obra está impregnada de referências da história da arte e da história política recente. As séries Prototypes e Biosynthetic (2016), inspiradas na música eletrônica e retomando os princípios construtivistas, combinam objetos escultóricos e fotografia 3D. As séries Phantom (2012) e Naturezas-mortas (2010) trazem em fotografias os registros de estranha beleza de um passado abandonado ou transfigurado em entulhos. Em Novos Heróis (2004), Loginov retrata moradores de rua pós-soviéticos como heróis do presente, sobreviventes do novo sistema.

     Artist of this edition 

    Andrei Loginov, Belarusian in activity in Berlin, graduated in painting in Minsk, and has a master's degree by the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf. Among photographs, photomontages, video art and installations, his work is impregnated with references from art history and recent political history. The series Prototypes and Biosynthetic (2016), inspired in electronic music and resuming the constructivist principles, combine sculptural objects and 3D photography. The series Phantom (2012) and Still-Life (2010) bring in photographs of strange beauty records of a past either abandoned or transfigured into rubble. In New Heroes (2004), Loginov depicts post-Soviet homeless as nowadays heroes, survivors of the new system.

    An outstanding feature of Frida Kahlo's work is introspection. Exploring physical and psychological traumas, Kahlo is persistent in self-portraits revealing her pain and anguish. The personal character of her production does not prevent it from being crossed by themes such as Mexican nationality, expressed in the use of typical costumes and in combining her image to the flora and fauna of her country. Frida and her husband, the muralist Diego Rivera, were leftist militants, and welcomed Trotsky and his wife when in search of exile in Mexico in 1937. Regarding the association of her work to surrealism, she adds: "I never painted dreams. What I showed was my reality."

    Amongst photographic images collected from the internet or "frozen" scenes from movies, Cláudio Tobinaga finds possibilities of narratives approaching the cinematographic process. It makes you feel, on the other hand, the apparent absence of his compositions, waving to the limits of fiction.

    For Tobinaga, "the atmosphere of the ordinary takes contours of a cheap Existentialism, the surface that lures is the same that cheats. This ghostly condition is a symptom in a world filled with images ". In the series World Tensions 23, between the opacity of the painting and the photographic transparency, there emerges the dystopian universe that illustrates this journal. A visual artist working in Rio de Janeiro, Claudius Tobinaga develops projects in multiple media such as painting, sculpture, photography, video and actions.

    Henrique Viudez é natural de Fortaleza e iniciou sua produção dedicando-se à arte urbana, com o grafite. Atualmente desenvolve seu trabalho em formatos menores, explorando as possibilidades da aquarela nas obras que ilustram Tensões Mundiais 22. Henrique parece buscar afinado equilíbrio tanto em suas composições formais quanto em sua temática. Utilizando delicados traços e cores ora intensas, ora diluidas, o artista alcança a potente expressao de sua pesquisa em torno de questões de gênero e religiosidade. O resultado são criaturas que se situam entre o mágico e o puramente humano, pairando em doce resistência contra elementos que remetem ao peso e à violência

    Henrique Viudez was born in Fortaleza and he started his work producing urban art, making use of graffiti. Currently he works with smaller shapes, exploring watercolor possibilities such as the ones that illustrate World Tensions 22. Henrique seems to look for a refined balance in his formal production as well as in his themes. Making use of delicate lines and colors that are sometimes strong, sometimes diluted, the artist reaches a powerful expression in his research on issues involving gender and religiousness. The result shows creatures falling between what is magical and what is purely human, hovering in sweet resistance against elements that refer to weight and violence.

    Daniel Mendes nasceu em Parnaíba (Piauí), em 1966. Artista autodidata, aprimorou-se no uso de elementos encontrados diretamente na natureza. Em suas esculturas, opta pela execução de intervenções discretas, que evidenciam a organicidade do suporte. Nas pinturas, encontra inspiração na arte indígena e “primitiva”, presença marcante nos sítios arqueológicos no Piauí. Daniel expõe permanentemente em Parnaíba, onde suas obras são adquiridas por colecionadores de diversos lugares do mundo. Entre exposições individuais e coletivas temporárias, destacam-se as realizadas em cidades nordestinas.

     Artist of this edition

    Daniel Mendes was born in Parnaíba (Piauí), in 1966. A self-taught artist, he focuses on the use of elements found directly in nature. In his sculptures, he opts for discrete interventions that show the integrity of the medium. In painting he finds inspiration in indigenous and primitive art strikingly present in Piauí archeological sites. Daniel shows his works permanently in Parnaiba where they are purchased by collectors from various places around the world. His temporary individual and collective exhibitions are mostly realized in Northeastern cities.

    Este número de Tensões Mundiais expõe parte dos grafites feitos durante o Festival Concreto, o 1° evento internacional de arte urbana no Nordeste do Brasil.     This edition of World Tensions exposes part of the graffiti made during the Concrete Festival, the 1° international urban art event in northeastern Brazil. The Festival happened in the period from 15 to 23 November 2013 on the metropolitan region of Fortaleza and had the participation of artists from countries of the Americas and Europe: Narcélio Grud Glauber Arbus and Cuco's Studio (Brazil), Love and Poet (Argentina), Bankssy (England), Borondo (Spain) and Ino (Greece).

    Graciano Dantas da Silva nasceu em Fortaleza há 46 anos. Ainda pequenino, seus pais - o pescador Pedro e a rendeira Aldenora - vieram morar na praia do Iguape, município de Aquiraz. É no povoado de pescadores, onde reside até hoje, que Graciano encontra inspiração para suas pinturas. Sem nunca ter frequentado um ateliê de arte, ele sonha em expor seus quadros que retratam com tintas coloridas, rendas e alto relevo a paisagem, o trabalho e a cultura de uma comunidade marítima do Ceará.

    Graciano Dantas da Silva was born in Fortaleza 46 years ago. When he was a little kid, his parents - the fisherman Pedro and the artisan Aldenora - came to live on the beach of Iguape, municipality of Aquiraz. It is in the fishermen village, where he resides today, that Graciano finds inspiration to his paintings. Without ever having attended a workshop of art, he dreams on exposing his works that portray with colored tints, laces and high relief the landscape, the work and the culture of a maritime community of Ceará.
