Starting with an analysis of Brazilian films, this essay separates out a theme dear to the history of art and
the construction of nations: the representation of popular dramas and personalities. Looking at the construction of the screenplay, the visual and dramaturgic treatment of Yellow Mango, the essay establishes relationships between this film and some of the patterns of modern cinema and literature. And, moreover, it puts into focus one of the axes of Brazilian formation, the Iberian legacies. The study is oriented by a theoretical question, the examination of the epistemological limits of sociology in treating art. In rejoinder,
it applies an analytical possibility opened by contemporary aesthetes, which reconciles poetry and language
with sociology and history.
