Written in the 16th century, the sacred book Popol Wuj is a constitutive part of the works that make up the colonial historiography of the Mayan indigenous tradition and is considered the masterpiece of Mesoamerican indigenous literature. This article will present its cosmogonic foundation and, above all, the historical, aesthetic and political legacy of Popol Wuj in contemporary mesoamerican indigenous struggles, particularly in Guatemala and Mexico.
