LINGUÍSTICA SISTÊMICO-FUNCIONAL: LINGUÍSTICA TEÓRICA OU APLICADA?

Neste ensaio, pretendo demonstrar que a Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional (LSF), tal como proposta por Michael Halliday, é, a um só tempo, linguística teórica (LT) e linguística aplicada (LA), mas transcendendo ambas e podendo ser considerada linguística aplicável. Para atingir esse objetivo, discorrerei, a princípio, sobre as definições de LT e LA, mostrando que a segunda derivou da primeira, tendo, depois, dela se distanciado; ademais, tentarei explicar a razão do distanciamento e a afinidade da LSF com a LT do ponto de vista da descrição e tipologia linguísticas. Em seguida, dentro do escopo da LT, abordarei as diferenças entre formalismo e funcionalismo tendo em vista a localização epistemológica da LSF. A partir da explicitação dessa localização, definirei ‘sistêmico’ e ‘funcional’ com a intenção de argumentar a favor tanto do fato de que a semântica sistêmico-funcional pode prescindir da disciplina ‘pragmática’ quanto do fato, portanto, de que a LSF é compatível com a LA. Por fim, tentarei construir a argumentação a favor da terceira via: LSF como linguística aplicável.
