Author Guidelines

Template for submissions

All manuscripts must be submitted according to the Guidelines for Authors. To facilitate the writing process, use the TEMPLATES below to compose the document.

Guidelines for authors and types of publications

The Scientific Journal Linguagem em Foco publishes, in online editions, unpublished works by researchers that possess at least a master's degree, as well as by doctoral and master's students in co-authorship with professors and researchers linked to national or international teaching and research institutions.

Regulatory norms and instructions for publication

1. General information

Regular issues are organized quadrennially based on the continuous flow system.

Special numbers, when edited, are organized into specific calls at the convenience of the organizer(s).

Papers must be original and unpublished and cannot be simultaneously evaluated for publication by another journal.

The maximum number of authors for the work must not be greater than 3 (three).

Papers may be written in Portuguese, English, Spanish or French. For works composed in a foreign language, the ABSTRACT and KEYWORDS must be written and inserted below the authors' names. In the case of works in English, French or Spanish, the ABSTRACT and KEYWORDS must be presented in English and at least in one of the other languages mentioned in this text (preferably in Portuguese).

All author(s) and co-author(s) must inform the title; the name of the institution to which they are linked, and its acronym; the city/state; the e-mail; Orcid as a footnote linked to each author's name.

2. Preparation of the originals

The text formatting must comply with the following parameters: Microsoft Word, Times New Roman font, 12pt size, 1.5 spacing in the body of the text, except for citations with more than 3 lines, footnotes and subtitles, which must be 10pt in size and uniform (according to ABNT - NBR 14724/2011).

Page formatting: A4 size paper – left and top margins 3 cm; right and bottom of 2 cm.

For manuscripts written in Portuguese, the text must comply with the rules of the Orthographic Agreement of the Portuguese Language, which became mandatory in Brazil since January 2016.

 Two versions of the manuscript must be submitted: one containing the name and affiliation of the author(s) and another in which all references to the author(s) are omitted, including the citations and references, replacing the information with XXXXXXXX.

Files can be sent in .DOC or .DOCX formats.

3. Body of the text

Articles must have minimum of 15 and maximum of 20 pages.

Reviews must have the minimum of 4 and maximum of 8 pages.

The review must contain, in the beginning, the complete reference of the reviewed work, including the number of pages, in Times New Roman font, size 12, single spacing, no title, no abstract and no keywords. The name(s) of the author(s) of the review, in size 12, must appear on the third line below the reference of the reviewed work, preceded by the expression “Reviewed by [name( s) of the author(s)]”. It must be followed by an asterisk(s) that refer(s) to a footnote containing the following information: name in full of the institution to which the author(s) is (are) affiliated(s) and its initials, unit, college or institute, campus, city, state, country; departmental link; email. The text of the review must come on the third line below the name(s) of the author(s) in Times New Roman, 12pt font and 1.5 spacing.

The manuscripts concerning thesis dissemination must have an abstract of 10 to 20 lines and the text by the author (new doctor) ranging from 3 to 5 pages.

 Interviews conducted with researchers whose research meets the journal's interest will also be accepted.

4. Article Structure

When elaborating the article, the author(s) must comply with the following textual sequence:

1. Title

   Centered at the top of the page and in bold (no emphasis), size 14pt, single-spaced. Right below, the title in the foreign language, centered in italics, size 12pt, single-spaced.

2. Name(s) of the author(s)

   Align to the right of the page (without bold or italics), two lines below the title with capital letters only for the initials, followed by the name of the institution and its initials, with an asterisk referring to the footnote for the presentation of the following information, in the order: full name of the institution to which he/she is linked and its acronym, unit, college or institute; departmental link; city and state initials; e-mail; curriculum Lattes; OrcId. Page formatting: A4 size paper – left and top margins 3 cm; right and bottom of 2 cm.

3. Abstract

   The text has to be located below the subtitle ABSTRACT (in capital letters and in bold), written in a single paragraph, justified, without indentation, in single spacing, with a minimum of 150 and a maximum of 250 words (according to ABNT - NBR 6028/2003), with the same font of the article.

4. Keywords

   Insert from 3 (three) to 5 (five) keywords. They must be preceded by the subtitle Keywords and a colon, written in capital letters and separated by a semicolon. To best locate the work in bibliographic consultations, the keywords must correspond to more general concepts of the area of the manuscript.

5. Abstract e Keywords written in the foreign language

   Follow the same guidelines used for the original abstract and keywords.

6. Text structure

   The text must come two single spaces after the Keywords in the foreign language, with 1.5 spacing, justified paragraphs and 1.25 cm indentation in the first line.
   Section subtitle: in bold, aligned to the left, without indentation, numbered by Arabic numerals, with the initial letter of the first word capitalized, size 12pt.  Introduction, Final Remarks and References are excluded from the numbering.

7. Citations

   Direct quotations with up to 3 lines: transcribed between double quotation marks, inserted in common paragraph in the body of the text, maintaining the same font type and size (according to ABNT - NBR 10520/2002).

   Example:

   1. In the words of Wardle and Derakhshan (2017, p. 4), “[...] ‘astroturfing’—the use of bots and cyborgs to manipulate the outcome of online petitions, change search engine results and boost certain messages on social media.”
   2. As stated by the authors, "[…] media education played a major role in pandemic times—what varied was the form, scale, and nature of interventions" (FRIESEM; RAMAN; KANIZAI; CHOI, 2022, p. 1).

   Quotes longer than 3 lines: without quotation marks, highlighted by a 4 cm indent on the left, with the same font, changing the size to 10.

   Example:
   As this implies, digital literacy is much more than a functional matter of learning how to use a computer and a keyboard, or how to do online searches. Of course, it needs to begin with some of the 'basics […] the skills that children need in relation to digital media are not confined to those of information retrieval. As with print, they also need to be able to evaluate and use information critically if they are to transform it into knowledge. This means asking questions about the sources of that information, the interests of its producers, and the ways in which it represents the world and understanding how these technological developments are related to broader social, political and economic forces. (BUCKINGHAM, 2015, p. 3)

   Quotations in a foreign language: in italics and with the translated version in a footnote.

   Citations of several works by the same author, published in the same year, must be discriminated by lowercase letters after the date, without spacing (ROJO, 2015a; 2015b). When the referenced work has two or three authors, all can be indicated, separated by a semicolon (CAVALCANTE; CUSTÓDIO FILHO; BRITO, 2014), and when there are more than 3 authors, indicate the first followed by “et al.” (COPE et al., 1996). We suggest avoiding the use of idem, ibid., or ibidem, op. cit.

8. Tables, illustrations and other visual elements

   Must be numbered with Arabic numerals, with identification at the top (according to ABNT - NBR 14724/2011). The title of tables, illustrations and other visual elements must be inserted at the top, centered, starting with the expression “Table 1” in bold, followed by a hyphen and the title in bold, in the same font and size as the body of the text. The numbering is consecutive, in Arabic numerals. If it is necessary to specify the data source, place it below the table or chart with the text aligned to the left, in 10pt size.

9. Footnotes

   In footer, size 10, justified, numbered according to the order of appearance.

10. Bibliography

    At the end of the text, below the subtitle Bibliography, aligned to the left, without indentation, in alphabetical order of surnames (according to ABNT - NBR 6023/2018).

5. Submissions

Papers must be submitted exclusively through the OJS platform. Click here to submit your paper. 

As explained in the section Peer Review Process, the works submitted will be analyzed by the journal's Editorial Committee to assess whether the texts are framed in the journal's editorial policy. If the work meets the requirements, it will be submitted anonymously for evaluation.

Note.1: Works that do not fit the thematic scope of the journal will be returned to the authors.

Note. 2: Papers that do not meet the journal's standards are returned to the authors. If modifications are recommended, they will be indicated in a document sent by e-mail to the authors.

Note. 3: Data and concepts issued in the works, as well as the accuracy of the references, are the sole responsibility of the author(s).

The author(s) will be notified by e-mail if the article is approved or rejected.
