The essay addresses those intellectuals who draw the conclusion that post-communist countries are foci of irrational nationalism. Terminological and methodological misunderstandings concerning the use of the term nationalism are pointed out. Ideas about real or partially imagined national interests accompany the existence of every nation. The prevailing type of nation-state formation in Central and Eastern Europe occurred through national movements started from a nondominant
ethnic group. This process
resulted in some characteristics typical
of the citizens of ‘small nations’.
