Abstract

This article examines Argentine State
reform during Menem’s government. A crucial
factor in its accomplishment was the
alliance between international creditors,
under World Bank and IMF leadership, and
national economic groups associated with
foreign conglomerates. In the course of the
political process known as “Argentinean
transformism”, the Peronist party turned
away from national-developmentist ideas
and from the social sectors it represented.
The study shows the centrality of the nation-state
in neoliberal policies and the repeated
interventions by multilateral agencies
to adapt it to the global market.
