In the 1930s, a renewed cycle of Brazilian modernism began, and Rachel de Queiroz was one of its developers. In her work, the modern expression helps the dialogue between literature and history, in both the esthetical and political programs. The representation of the spoken language, associated with conciseness, and documental accuracy, are all virtues that the writer cultivated. In her last romance, we can follow the update of the modern epic in the construction of popular dramas and heroes.
