The main aim of this work is to analyse the rhetorical movements present published in academic reviews between 1953 and 2020. The diachronic analysis covers a period of 67 years, divided into three generational phases: a) 1953-1970; b) 1971-2000; and c) 2001-2020. The division was based on the methodological parameters proposed by the Discursive Traditions paradigm. Each phase consists of 15 texts, totalling 45 samples collected from Brazilian scientific journals in the fields of Literature and Linguistics. The results identified four rhetorical movements present in the reviews: introducing the book, summarising the content, evaluating the book and issuing a final opinion. Linked to these movements, rhetorical sub-units were identified that revealed a departure from previous research. The four movements, subdivided into 16 rhetorical subunits, revealed different frequencies and forms of updating, which demonstrated variations in each generational phase, thus highlighting the constant tension between change and permanence of the genre.
