Abstract

In this text, I examine the activities of General Maurice Gustave Gamelin, the leader of the French military mission contracted by the Brazilian government
to modernize the army. Little known or even unknown in the specialist iterature, Gamelin was active bet een 1919 and 1924, guiding the most radical transformation ever undertaken by this institution in the whole of its existence. Based, above all, on the available documentation in the French Army’s Historical Service, I investigate the personality, motivations and modus operandi of the French general. My objective is to contribute to the study of Brazilian military modernization. Moreover, this study can offer
rudiments for understanding the great
powers’ involvement in Latin American
in between the two world wars.
