This article analyzes the December
2007 Venezuelan referendum as
part of the ongoing process of social
transformations in the country. After
presenting the key constitutional reforms
supporting Chavez’s socialist
project and the oppositional groups’
attempts for military intervention, the
causes and consequences of the electoral
defeat are discussed. The diagnosis
points campaign errors and
structural weakness, highlighting two
problems that influenced the high
number of voters’ abstention: scarcity
of food and inflation.
