This paper argues that discursive representation in the media of so-called Third World immigrants in Spain has facilitated the reconstruction of a national identity, in terms of “us” (Spaniards) versus “them” (Third World immigrants) at the turn of the 21st century. In this fashion, Spaniards are discursively
represented as the insiders or the ones who belong to the nation, while socalled Third World immigrants are the outsiders/strangers or excluded people.
