This article analyzes the performance of the African Union (AU) in its first ever peace-keeping mission undertaken in Burundi. We support the hypothesis that its efficacy was related to the structure adopted by the organization, that is, its transformation from Organization of African Unity to AU and its impact on the security context. Besides, we seek to demonstrate that the new union ensured better energy in the resolution of the conflict in Burundi.
