The protests of 2013 continue to foment productive debates about the political reality of contemporary Brazil. Drawing upon a critical review of important social science theorists, notably Manuel Castells, this article seeks to understand the motivations and particularities, of the protests. It is proposed that the horizontality and absence of established leaderships engendered a more participatory political mobilization but also supported the efforts of the mainstream media to direct
the course of the social movements.
