I analyse Gramsci’s internationalist thinking from a sociological perspective, interpreting how he reconciled the ideals inherent to “proletarian internationalism” with the demand for national Italian unification. The methodology consists of tracing a parallel between biography and “Political Writings”, exposing his first forays in favour of the independence of Sardinia, his turn to workers’ militancy in Turin and the fight against fascism. I conclude with arguments from nationality theorists.
