The article analyzes the background of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the largest and most relevant institution in Africa. It emerges in 1963 from the historical trajectory of the continent marked by exploitation, slavery, colonization, armed struggles, pan-Africanism and nationalism; processes that culminated in decolonization, self-determination of peoples and independence. The OAU results from the friction of two groups of countries, Monrovia and Casablanca, which fought for the same objective: the end of colonization.
