Post-apartheid South Africa:
‘human security’ and defence policy
Keywords:
South Africa, Defence policy, Armed Forces in Transition, Defence cooperationAbstract
The article analyzes the role of the concept of human security in the renewal of South Africa’s Defence Policy in the post-apartheid era. With an emphasis on the bureaucratic- institutional transition of the armed forces and their employment in UN and African Union peacekeeping missions, the research shows that, albeit adopting a human security framework, there is a mismatch between the scale of engagement in peace missions and South African material capabilities.
