More than a socialist (or developmentalist) transformation, the Venezuelan economy experienced a massive transfer of income to the importing capital and a transfer to a bureaucratic-military caste that lives at the expense of public coffers through the overvaluation of the currency and fraudulent imports at preferential prices. More than a classic socialist revolution, the Bolivarian project resembles a militaristic national-populism.
