Intelectuais, mídia e Estado nas comemorações dos ''500 anos''do Brasil

Abstract

The article presents a retrospective
of the official version of the celebrations
of “500 years of Brazilian Discovery”.
My purpose is to demonstrate
how the Federal Government intended
to appropriate the symbolic date to promote
a renewal of nationalist feeling
and to stimulate emotions of unity and
social cohesion. As I suggest, commemorative
ceremonies are a perfect arena
for the revival of memory, the invention
of a tradition or the crystallization
of an ideology.
