Abstract

Globalization is portrayed as the Americanization of (or US hegemony over) the world economy. Sustaining this process is the supremacy of the US dollar in international monetary and
financial transactions. Despite the fragility of the US economy, this supremacy is accepted because there has been no viable alternative.
