This paper attempts to identify the factors responsible for the success of the indigenous movement in Bolivia and to explain why it was Evo Morales’ Movement to Socialism (MAS) rather than the Movimiento Indígena Pachakuti that gained ascendancy. It explores aspects of the indigenous discourse that have generally not been remarked on but which throw new light on previous accounts.
