Oil is not simply a fuel commodity: the guarantee of supply in the medium-term can be used as a political weapon. This article sketches a panorama of world economic dependence on the commodity and its reserves concentrated in developing countries. The expectation of scarcity and the concept of “natural resource
nationalism” are put forth for debate.
