When and why does ethno-national secessionism become violent? The approaches of the cultural, economic and political order are insufficient to answer this question. This article emphasizes the geopolitical framework and ideology as central variables to explain the flexible character of ethno-nationalist secessionism. The approach is illustrated empirically with an historical analysis of the Serbian case in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
