Contrary to many other analyses, this article argues that national integration in Guinea-Bissau is high from the bottom-up and not principally the result of State action. The Independence movement advocated a model of “national unity in ethnic diversity.” Nationality-building did not follow, in effect, successful state
construction. The 1998-1999 invasion of the country fomented even more national integration.
