The debates on international security can be understood as a contest between two rival fields: on the one hand, a traditionalist and restrictive view; on the other hand, an expansive and multidimensional trend. This article examined the different interpretations involved in each field, from a critical approach of the international relations theory, and identified the predominant perspective, questioning prevailing studies in the area in a global scenario of conflicts and threats.
