Obstetric violence and the order from the Ministry of Health

In an Order of May 3, 2019, the Ministry of Health declared the use of the term “obstetric violence” as inappropriate and harmful to assistance to the pregnancy-puerperal cycle. The term, used by women's movements in the past decade, names abuse, disrespect and mistreatment in obstetric care. This article analyzes the narrative disputes over sexual and reproductive rights that permeate the Order and reactions to it.
