The armed struggle developed in Mozambique, in the early 1960s, by the Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO), gave the necessary support to the process of Mozambican independence in 1975. The main objective of this article is to examine how the struggle of national liberation of Mozambique and the attempt to build a new nation through FRELIMO, denying the old Portuguese colonial past and building what was conventionally called the “mozambican new man”. For methodological purposes, it will be a qualitative study, as it aims at a historical reconstruction through the bibliographic reference referring to the object of study. Regarding the results, we found that despite the attempts to build a new society, Mozambique for natural reasons, domestic and international politics, did not succeed, mainly due to the counteroffensive of the National Resistance of Mozambique (RENAMO).
