Before being elected president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez was an active military man, organizer of the military left and leader of an armed insurrection. This article will discuss the occurrences inside and outside the barracks, investigating the emergence and development of this military. It combines literature review with interviews. It is concluded that Hugo Chávez is an example for the discussion of the military left (QUARTIM, 2005) and the role of the individual in history (PLEKHANOV, 1898).
