The essay addresses the relationship between sociological theory and modernity, questioning the normative and exclusionary dimensions of the sociological canon. It recovers the critical and negative formulations of Harriet Martineau and W.E.B. Du Bois, highlighting sexism and racism as institutional axes. It thus proposes a rereading that challenges the canon by integrating peripheral and
neglected perspectives, formulating an institutional matrix of modernity based on the polyphonic openness of sociological thought.
