We reflect on debates that Raewyn Connell has made about southern theory. We present her discussion of classic sociological authors and her criticism of social theory from the global South. Connell does not exclude the importance of canons, but highlights the value of southern theory for the social sciences and some of their characteristics, such as specificity, contextualization, the debate on social inequalities and the commitment to democracy.
