Abstract

Dyslipidemia is a disease characterized by elevated plasma levels of total cholesterol and LDL-C, leading to a risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Phytosterols have been widely studied in order to elucidate their action on lipid levels and thus be included in the nutritional treatment of dyslipidemia. The study aimed to identify the experimental and clinical evidence of phytosterols and phytostanols in the prevention of dyslipidemia, based on the guiding question: “What is the experimental and clinical evidence of the action of phytosterols and phytostanols in the prevention of dyslipidemia?” An integrative literature review was carried out with searches in the Pubmed, LILACS, Scielo and Web of Science databases. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the analysis of the articles that answered the guiding question and that presented in their results considerations about the clinical and experimental evidence in the prevention of dyslipidemia, 10 works were selected to compose the article. Studies showed that the reduction in total cholesterol and LDL-C occurred due to their reduced absorption and increased elimination in feces. It can be concluded that phytosterols and phytostanols are bioactive compounds that act to reduce dyslipidemia, and the routes of administration can be through supplementation using them alone, foods with functional properties added with plant sterols and or natural foods rich in these substances. It is suggested that the consumption of these compounds be stimulated, contributing to the reduction of dyslipidemia and cardiovascular diseases.
