Abstract

The Brazilian Standard for the Marketing of Food for Infants and Early Childhood Children, Babies, Pacifiers and Bottles (NBCAL) continues to be systematically violated, exposing mothers and children to the abusive marketing of products that compete with breastfeeding. The objective was to evaluate the compliance of NBCAL regarding the commercial promotion of products that compete with breastfeeding in commercial establishments in Salvador-BA/Brazil. The study was conducted by direct observation of the commercial establishments using a structured electronic form and the data submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. Of the 131 commercial establishments visited, the girls had the highest proportion of commercial promotion; discount was the most frequent commercial promotion (67.97%); and, infant formulas for infants aged 6 to 12months, bottles and milks in general suffered the highest infraction, being respectively 29.52%, 23.40% and 40.63%. Phrases in favor of breastfeeding were present in only 27.48% of the establishments visited. This study showed that most commercial establishments in Salvador-BA/Brazil are not complying with the NBCAL, which reinforces the need for permanent monitoring and implementation of educational actions related to the dissemination of NBCAL at the point of sale, as well as the strengthening of public policies to encourage and protect breastfeeding.
