Music as a health education strategy at the Psychosocial Care Center

Abstract

Purpose: To report the experience of using music as a therapeutic foundation for mental health education for users of the Psychosocial Care Center in the city of Parnaíba, Piauí, Brazil. Methodology: This is an experience report on a music group with users and professionals of the aforementioned service, whose meetings took place from August to October 2018, recording observations about this practice. Results: It was evident that the music group proved to be potentially beneficial to the participants, with increased participation in group activities, overcoming shyness, renewing self-esteem, improving interpersonal relationships and communication, in addition to stimulating the search for knowledge with regard to health care matters. Conclusions: Despite the need for deeper studies on the subject, the behavioral and affective developments that strengthen therapeutic practice, in addition to learning about health issues, were notable.
