Objective: This study aimed to analyze the frequency of eating practices suggestive of disordered eating among patients with mood disorders treated at a reference outpatient clinic. Methods: This was a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study that evaluated a sample of 24 adult and elderly patients diagnosed with mood disorders (DSM-5-TR) in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. Eating behavior was assessed using the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-R21), which measures Cognitive Restraint, Emotional Eating, and Uncontrolled Eating. The analysis described the simple frequency of eating practices reported in the participants’ daily routines. Results: The sample (N=24) was predominantly female (87.5%) and diagnosed mainly with Bipolar Affective Disorder (75%). The most frequent eating practices were related to Emotional Eating and Uncontrolled Eating. Regarding Emotional Eating, 62.5% reported eating when anxious, and 50% when feeling depressed or tense/stressed. In Uncontrolled Eating, 62.5% reported eating excessively even without hunger, and 50% reported feeling unable to stop eating. No Cognitive Restraint behaviors were reported by the majority of participants. Conclusion: The high prevalence of emotional and uncontrolled eating suggests that disruptive eating behavior is an important comorbidity in mood disorders. Emotional eating serves as a coping mechanism to alleviate negative emotions and is considered a significant risk factor for the development of Binge Eating Disorder. Therefore, the clinical management of individuals with mood disorders should include the assessment and close monitoring of these eating behaviors.
