Objectives: This study aims to compare the specificity and sensitivity of the nutritional screening methods NRS 2002 and MST in surgical patients. Methods: This is a descriptive observational study, conducted with patients admitted to the Surgical Clinic of the Regional Hospital of Santa Maria (HRSM), the Secretary of State of the Federal District Health (SES/DF) with total sample of 40 patients. The data collection was performed by trained nutritionists and was Made Along to said patients in until 72 hours after the admission by the application of nutritional status screening instruments – the Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 – NRS 2002, the Malnutrition Screening Tool – MST and the Subjective Global Assessment – ASG, this last one being used as the gold standard for determining the sensitivity and specificity of the above methods. Results: The nutritional screening methods MST and NRS 2002 had adequate specificity to correctly detect the well -nourished patients, but low sensitivity was observed to identify the group at nutritional risk through these instruments. Conclusion: The nutritional screening methods MST and NRS 2002 had adequate specificity to correctly detect the well-nourished patients, but low sensitivity was observed in identifying the group at nutritional risk through these instruments.
