Correlation between food consumption and prevalence of sarcopenia in aged people from two cities in Ceará, Brazil

Introduction: sarcopenia is currently considered a non-communicable chronic disease, consisting in the loss or impairment of skeletal muscle, power and consequently of the force. Objective: To search for correlations between food intake with the prevalence of sarcopenia in the elderly of two cities of Ceará, observing if their eating habits influence the diagnosis of sarcopenia. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study, conducted with 65 elderly living in two cities, Fortaleza and Icó. It was applied a demographic questionnaire, an 24-hour food recall and the algorithm test. Statistical analysis was performed using the Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: The pathology was present in both cities, with a higher prevalence in men of the city Icó (23.1%) and women in Fortaleza (42.8%), comparing the same gender between cities. The intake of carbohydrate and lipid presented is deficient in both cities, while protein intake exceeded the recommendation of the GDR. Reconnecting the micronutrient, only vitamin C showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) between groups, and their adequate intake in non sarcopenic elderly. Conclusion: Eating habits with higher intake of vitamin C were associated with prevention of sarcopenia.
