Association between bladder cancer and healthy dietary patterns

Bladder cancer represents a global health challenge and has the second highest mortality among urological cancers, has environmental and lifestyle determinants associated with its occurrence. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association between healthy eating patterns and bladder cancer. An integrative review was used through the Pubmed, Medline, Embase, and Scopus databases. Twenty-three observational studies have shown mixed results on the relationship between the Mediterranean diet and bladder cancer risk. Some found an inverse association with fruits, vegetables, carotenoids, and vitamins, while others did not observe a significant association. Case-control studies have associated the consumption of citrus fruits with a reduced risk, in addition to carotenoids and vitamins C and E, potentially decreasing the likelihood of developing the disease. These findings are significant and point to the need for further studies on Mediterranean and antioxidant-rich diets in that context. The study suggests that the association between healthy dietary patterns and bladder cancer is complex and still lacks robust evidence and recommends further studies on the relationship between healthy dietary patterns and bladder cancer, exploring other aspects of the natural history of that disease and the integration of different areas such as metabolomics, genetics, epidemiology, and nutrition.
