Abstract

Pressure ulcers (PUs) are a serious public health problem affecting hospitalized patients. Providing adequate nutritional therapy contributes to the prevention and treatment of these lesions. The objective of the study is to evaluate the caloric-protein adequacy of nutritional therapy in trauma patients with pressure ulcers receiving exclusive enteral nutrition therapy. The sample consisted of 99 trauma patients, of whom 35 had PUs. Clinical, anthropometric, and dietary information was collected from the participants, and the data were subjected to association tests and mean comparisons. To analyze the protein and caloric adequacy of the diet, the association between adequate and inadequate nutritional therapy, according to recommendations for PUs, and the stages of the lesion was verified. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program, considering a significance level of p>0.05. Regarding nutritional therapy, a higher prevalence of protein adequacy was found in the diets of patients with stages 1 and 2 PUs compared to stages 3 and 4 (p=0.011). However, regarding calories, there was no association between adequacy and the stages of the lesion. The majority of patients with LPP were diagnosed with malnutrition (80%) according to arm circumference, with a statistical difference in relation to patients without LPP (p=0.018). A higher prevalence of adequate protein intake in the diet was found in patients with stage 1 and 2 of the lesions. However, the adequacy of dietary calories is not related to the stages of the injury.
