Perioperative fasting time for elective surgeries in a hospital complex in the North-Northeast

The metabolic response associated with surgical trauma may be more aggressive due to prolonged fasting. National and international guidelines published in recent years recommend decreasing preoperative fasting time to 6-8 hours for solid foods and 2 hours for clear liquids. To evaluate the perioperative fasting time of elective surgeries in a hospital complex in the North-Northeast. Cross-sectional, retrospective study, carried out at the Real Hospital Português de Beneficência in Pernambuco, in the city of Recife-PE, from April to June 2023. Patients aged 20 years or over, of both sexes, were included. underwent elective surgical procedures and collected demographic data, clinical information and information regarding surgical procedures. 240 patients participated in the study, with a mean age of 49.4 years, 54.3% female, with hypertension being the most prevalent comorbidity (20.8%). The average preoperative fasting time for elective surgeries was 12.53 ± 2.48 hours and the total average fasting time was 16.21 ± 3.68 hours. The presence of comorbidity showed a strong correlation with the total fasting time (p=0.037). The perioperative fasting time for elective surgeries was above what is recommended in the literature.
