O vínculo empregatício e a licença maternidade como influências na duração do aleitamento materno exclusivo

Abstract

Introduction

Breastfeeding has widely known and defended benefits. Brazil has made progress in public policies that encourage breastfeeding, but still has worrying rates, especially exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). Several factors can interfere in this practice, such as maternal employment. The objective of the research was to evaluate the relationship between employment and maternity leave on the duration of EBF in a municipality in Rio Grande do Sul.

Methods

Cross-sectional quantitative study, carried out in seven local Basic Health Units and through Community Health Agents. A semi-structured interview was used regarding sociodemographic characteristics, breastfeeding, and the mother's occupation. Data were evaluated by hypothesis testing and odds ratio to compare the duration of EBF between women with and without employment and between groups with different duration of maternity leave.

Results

The sociodemographic profile of the 73 interviewees was heterogeneous. The average breastfeeding among women who had already stopped the practice and the duration of EBF was approximately four months. There was no statistical difference in maintaining EBF between women with and without a job. There was also no association between the practice and the duration of maternity leave. However, maternal work was indicated as one of the justifications for introducing early food in several cases, demonstrating that employment does not interfere with breastfeeding alone, but work circumstances may be related to the results.

Conclusions

The duration of EBF is permeated by numerous constraints, one of which is the mother's employment relationship. It is concluded that labor laws need to be expanded and effectively enforced to offer better conditions for workers to breastfeed. The formal and informal support network is also essential, contributing to maternal and child health, the company and society as a whole.
